Job Position: Curatorial Assistant

The Quartermain Earth Science Centre (QESC) in Fredericton, New Brunswick, houses one of the largest geological collections in Atlantic Canada. One of the QESC’s important missions is practising effective and sustainable geopreservation of the historic collections housed within the museum laboratory at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton Campus. We have invested in a comprehensive database system for natural specimens as well as refurbished space within the Department of Earth Science for sustainable care.

The QESC is also devoted to public education to promote earth science literacy and sustainability through its museum exhibits and outreach programs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: The Curatorial Assistant will help the Curator at the museum in cataloguing these historic fossil, mineral and rock museum specimens as well as prepare them for storage (training is provided). Duties also include: 1) working with the exhibit design and instillation team in preparing specimens and materials for the new Exhibits related to critical minerals, and 2) maintaining and developing interactive hands-on Earth Science outreach activities. Duties may also include interacting with young students and the general public during Earth Science outreach events.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have a degree related to palaeontology and the geological sciences, an interest in information management, geopreservation, museum collections, and the natural world. The candidate should also have an interest in science education and comfortable with young students. Must be honest, have self-motivation to complete projects in a timely manner, be able to work independently as well as in consultation with the curator, science researchers, educators, and exhibit designers.

OTHER DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Basic knowledge of computers, photography, and XRD equipment, familiarity with database structure and management, ability to work with a team as well as independently, adaptable to change, high degree of organization and attention to detail, and thrives in a co-operative environment. Preference will be given to candidate with a university science degree that includes courses in the geological and/or biological sciences.

The applicant will gain knowledge on the basic techniques of museum procedures and collection care methodology. She or he will broaden their knowledge of rocks, minerals and fossils as they are presented in a museum setting, enhance their presentation skills, as well as develop/improve teaching abilities in the Earth and Biological Sciences. The applicant will also achieve her or his legacy at the QESC by contributing to these important projects to preserve our geoheritage, our history, and contribute to education in promotion of science literacy.

 

This position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program, and all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:

-are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians -holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);

-are legally entitled to work in Canada;

-are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

-are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;

-will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;

-are unemployed or underemployed;

-are a college or university graduate;

-are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program; and

-have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: The Cutorial Assistant for Outreach and Education will help the Curator then independently plan and deliver the various geoscience outreach activities at the museum and at remote locations. They will help maintain current educational activities, and interact with students and educators. The successful applicant will help maintain the museum and have opportunities to participate with the team in the design and instillation of new interactive educational museum exhibits and demonstrations.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in science education, a basic knowledge of Earth Science, and comfortable with young students. The candidate should have good organizational and communication skills. Must be honest, have self-motivation to complete projects in a timely manner, be able to work independently as well as in consultation with the curator, science researchers, educators, and exhibit designers.

OTHER DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: A good imagination, basic knowledge of computers and photography equipment, ability to work with a team as well as independently, attention to detail, and thrives in a safe, co-operative environment
